Group Grief Counseling Sessions Essay

Counseling Group The author of this report has been asked to create a support group. As part of that group creation, the author of this report will define the type of group, why the author chose this type of group, the population that will be served, the number of sessions that will be held, the number of participants that will be involved and the overall goals of the counseling group. While there is always more than one to do something, there are some methods that work better than others and this is certainly true when it comes to a counseling session of any sort and this would also be very true whether one is speaking of a group or just the duo of a provider and a patient.

The type of group that the author of this report has chosen is a grief recovery group. The author has chosen this type of group because it is something that everyone goes through at one point or another. Some people encounter it at the "normal" intervals when death is basically expected while others are hit with grief situations early and often in their life. Famous examples of the latter would be the Kennedy political family and Jennifer Hudson. The population that would be served would be adults that are facing grief-oriented situations. Teens and children would not be included as their needs are different and thus they should be treated in a more intimate...

People that need more intensive care should probably see a psychiatrist or psychologist. The number of participants should probably not be affixed in stone but anything more than a dozen is probably pushing it. It would depend on how many participate. If there are people there that just want to sit and absorb the scene, this would be perfectly fine. However, everyone that wants to speak should be given the time and space to do so. If there are too many people involved, that can become an issue. As for how many sessions would be needed, the sessions would be ongoing. People can attend as they feel the need and desire and they can otherwise come and go as they need to. There shouldn't be any commitment for mandating that people attend but there should still be a reminder and an encouragement that the more treatment (even if it's not the group in question) is received, the better. Indeed, whatever works best for a patient is the way to go so long as they are progressing and healing.
The overall goal of the counseling group would be to help people adjust and move beyond their loss. Of course, people that lose a loved one like a parent or a spouse are truly never going to be the same but there can be a point where…
